Run club in Swadlincote
South Derbyshire Road Runners is a club based at Greenbank Leisure Centre in Swadlincote, formed in 1984 and affiliated since 1985. It caters for all abilities, from beginners to experienced racers, with qualified coaches running the club training nights. A typical Wednesday night offers four group options, from a social 3-4.5 mile jog to structured and interval sessions, and members often go to the Sir Nigel Gresley pub in Swadlincote afterwards.
Running is on Wednesday evenings, meeting from 18:45 and leaving at 19:00, with four groups: Social Fours (3-4.5 miles, jog and chat), Five Plus (around 5 miles, extended if the group is able), Structured Training (speed work, hill work and speed endurance on rotation) and Interval Training (short intervals, hill sprints, tempo, threshold and speed endurance), which meets at Conkers Discovery car park rather than Greenbank. Runners are not tied to one group and can pick a different group each week. Newcomers can try the club free for a few weeks before being asked to commit to membership after about a month. Membership is £12 per year for runners (£10 walkers), running 1 April to 31 March and including club night sessions; competition registration with UK Athletics costs an extra £23 per year and gives £2 off most races. The club advises contacting the secretary before attending training, as 2-3 times a year sessions are held at alternative venues. The club competes in the Leicester Road Running League, Burton & District Summer League and Derby Runner Cross Country Leagues, and runs an internal club championship and a standard times scheme.
