Saltwell Harriers

Saltwell Harriers is a running club in Gateshead, founded in 1890, covering road running, fell running, cross country and parkrun. Members range from casual joggers and fun runners to 10k, half marathon, marathon and fell runners, and the club competes in local races and relays in red and white hooped vests. Training runs twice a week from Gateshead Leisure Centre and all sessions are led by qualified running coaches.

Training is on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, starting at 19:00 at Gateshead Leisure Centre and lasting about an hour, beginning and ending at the same point. On Tuesdays runners are split into five ability-appropriate groups and sessions include speed intervals, hills, tempo, pyramid and fartlek; on Thursdays runners train as a single mixed-ability group. Example routes include a run to the Angel of the North (about 6 miles), Newcastle Quayside and back, loops of Saltwell Park, Team Valley and back, hill work, and occasional timed sessions such as a 5k. Members book into their running group using the Spond app. Membership costs £50 for new members joining between October and March, £25 for new members joining between April and September, and £35 a year for existing members (renewing in September); club vests are £20 extra and are required for some races. Prospective members can try a few sessions first by emailing saltwellharriers1890@gmail.com, including an estimated current 5km time. Members also get discounted or improved-chance entry into some major races. England Athletics affiliated club.
