Westerlands Cross Country Club

Westerlands CCC is a small to medium-sized running club based in the west end of Glasgow that specialises in hill and off-road running. It was founded in 1977 as an offshoot of Glasgow University Hares & Hounds and now runs regular evening sessions, club races and social events. Typical club runs last about 90 minutes to 2 hours, cover around 10km and include some climbing.

Monday evening sessions are hill reps held in both the west end and the southside of Glasgow, meeting at 18:30 most weeks year round; road shoes are usually suitable. Wednesday evening club runs take place at hillier, off-road locations around Glasgow (Kilpatricks, Campsies, Ochils and similar), with meeting points split between north and south of the city and chosen where possible for public transport access; in summer a local Wednesday hill race or social run may replace the club run. Required kit for Wednesday runs: waterproof jacket and trousers, hat and gloves, food and water, charged mobile phone and off-road shoes, plus a head torch and extra layers in winter; spare kit can be arranged for first runs. Runs are split into at least two groups, one at a more social pace and one faster and longer, with an intermediate group when enough run leaders are available. The club also organises hill races, club handicap races, time trials and summer and winter leagues, and encourages members to marshal at least once a year. Membership runs from 1 October to 30 September and is offered at full and social rates (2025/2026 rates listed as to be confirmed), with automatic renewal; benefits include racing for the club, a London Marathon entry draw, club weekends away, monthly curry meets and retailer discounts.
