Run club in Melbourne
The Melbourne Midday Milers (MMMs) are a casual running club based at the Tan Track in Melbourne, formed in 1978 by Reserve Bank of Australia staff who ran at lunchtime. The group meets at 12:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays for structured interval, fartlek or hill sessions, with weekend long runs and parkruns as well. Members span a broad range of ages and abilities and all levels of runners are welcome.
Sessions are an informal but structured lunch-time program of intervals, fartlek, hill and tempo work, usually lasting about 30-40 minutes so they fit into a lunch hour; a fortnightly training schedule is published in advance on the website. Tuesday and Thursday sessions are normally at the Pillars of Wisdom on the Tan, occasionally relocating to the old Olympic Park 500m track on Olympic Boulevard (AOP) or Gosch's Paddock. Weekend running includes a team parkrun at various venues and long runs of around 20km at Albert Park (MSAC) or Eaglemont. Paces vary and sessions can be modified for individuals; as a guide, members run roughly 11:30-20 minutes for the Tan or 15-25 minutes for 5km. The club is a recreational club affiliated with Athletics Victoria and membership includes Athletics Victoria insurance; many members also belong to another AV club for competition. There is an internal championship of about 10 handicapped events from 1 mile to 10k, plus social events. Visitors may attend a few sessions before joining; contact details are on the club website.
