Illawarra Blue Stars Athletics Club

Illawarra Blue Stars is an athletics club in Wollongong, founded in 1953, offering track, field and cross country for all ages and ability levels, from under 8s through to masters (women 30, men 35). Summer competition is held on Sunday afternoons at the Kerryn McCann Athletic Centre, while the winter season is cross country, road walking and walks at varying locations. The club says it caters for everyone from elite athletes to fun runners and parents who want to stay fit, and it is affiliated with Athletics NSW and Athletics Australia.

Membership requires registering with both Athletics New South Wales (ANSW) and Illawarra Blue Stars; ANSW offers several membership categories and registration is done through the ANSW online system, where fees (including the club fee passed on to the club) are paid at the time of registering. An IBS membership form must also be completed manually and given to the Club Registrar, and a small club fee is added to cover equipment. New athletes get at least two weeks to trial before registering, and associated membership is available but limits which events can be contested outside club activities. The summer season runs from September to March at the Kerryn McCann Athletic Centre, with a four-week cycle of events covering sprints, distance, relays, walks, hurdles, steeplechase, jumps and throws; the winter season (May to August) covers cross country, road walking and walks at various locations, plus a winter track and field meet every fourth Sunday. Coaches and qualified officials are available for all events and all ages, and athletes can progress to All Schools, Country, State and national titles if they wish. Members must attend at least 50 per cent of club meets to be eligible for the point score competition. Further details, forms and fee information are on the club website.
